5. Hilde Peeters

Hilde is a veritable Brussels amateur of culture. Art and culture are leading themes in her career. She first went to work in the community centres in Jette and Koekelberg and later at the Kaaitheater. Today she’s an ‘Arts’ counsellor at Ans Persoons’ cabinet. Also for leisure, she can often be found in Brussels’ places of culture.  

“There are three themes close to my heart: arts, nightlife, and children. I dream of a dynamic city where every artist can have an affordable studio, and where every resident can enjoy a safe and inclusive nightlife. I dream of a child-friendly city where every kid can play and have physical activities close to home.” 

After studying Germanic languages at the former Katholieke Universiteit Brussel (KUB), I stayed in Brussels. I have been exploring our vibrant city for almost 20 years now.  

I believe that small actions can make the difference in your daily life, and in that of others. I love improving my living environment, not only for myself but also for other Brussels residents. Small encounters connect you with your neighbours and your environment. While I was studying, I enjoyed reading to foreign-language Brussels children in ‘Boekenbende aan Huis’. Today, I like spending my free time organising neighbourhood parties, flea markets, and I’m committed to the local Culture Council.

I’ve been trying to bring people in touch with art and culture throughout my career. After five years working at the cabinet, I’ve learned that you can really make a difference on the political level. For instance, during this legislature, we increased the number of places for nightlife in the city, we made sure that children can play safely in the squares of their neighbourhoods, and that artists have a decent studio to work in.
