12. Nelke Ramael
During my years at university, it struck me how much inequality there still was between men and women. My female friends and I were regularly harassed and confronted with sexist remarks. That felt unfair. Especially because my mother and grandmother are strong women whom I admire. It frustrated me that, after three generations, I was still going through the same situations as them.
I turned my frustration into an article on sexism and transgressive behaviour for the student magazine at VUB. That caused quite a bit of discussion and brought about change. It showed me that change is possible and it inspired me to become politically active.
Going into politics was a logical step for me, as I was exposed to socialism at home from a young age. Current affairs were discussed critically at the kitchen table, which made me interested in society and the ins and outs of politics from an early age.
A safe Brussels for all
That is why I want to work for a safe Brussels for all, with an extra focus on the safety of women and LGBTQI+ persons. Sexual harassment, violence against women and LGBTQI+ persons, and public spaces that are not suited to everyone, are all factors that create a sense of insecurity.
We need well-lit streets, reliable public transport and safe meeting places. Addressing gender inequality is therefore essential to creating a safe and inclusive city. All citizens must feel free and protected. Only then will we ensure a city on a human scale.
My background
I was born in the centre of Brussels and grew up in a social housing estate in Evere. I spent my high school years in Etterbeek, then studied history at the VUB. While I was a student, I was active in the VUB's student magazine, where I was editor-in-chief for a year. Since 2019, I have been working as a political group member for Vooruit in the Flemish Parliament, where I focus on equal opportunities, education, welfare and Brussels policy. I live in Laeken, with my boyfriend and our darling cat, Oscar. In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading and life. On a sunny day, you can find me on a terrace in the city.
Enjoying our city anytime, anywhere
I am committed to a Brussels where everyone feels safe. On the streets, in a café, with friends, in a nightclub, at home or anywhere else. Always and everywhere, every person should feel safe and welcome. That way we can all enjoy our beautiful capital.
