Volunteers from the local branch of Vooruit.brussels took to the streets today in the South District and the Wheel District for an extensive spring clean. With grabbers and bin bags, they thoroughly tackled the neighbourhood. Over 15 bags of rubbish were collected.

The Zuidwijk, both inside and outside Brussels, has a poor reputation and that is partly due to public cleanliness. Underground containers: taking out the rubbish at any time<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A one-off clean-up operation will not solve the structural problem. For this reason, Vooruit.brussels has been advocating for years for the rollout of underground waste containers in neighbourhoods such as the Zuidwijk and the Wielswijk. Containers give residents the opportunity to dispose of their waste at any time of the day or week, without being dependent on fixed collection days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Underground bins also significantly reduce litter and fly-tipping: no full bags on the street, no scattering by wind or animals, and a neater appearance for the whole neighbourhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe 15 bags of rubbish we collected today show how big the problem is. A spring clean helps, but doesn't solve it. Underground containers and more street vacuum cleaners will solve it structurally. We are opting for the latter,\u201d says Hilde Peeters (Vooruit.brussels).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n


Thanks to Vooruit.brussels' years of campaigning, the new Brussels government will allocate \u20ac4 million this year to install underground containers and purchase special lorries for emptying them. By the end of the legislative period, there should be around a hundred new sorting facilities in the city.
Vooruit.brussels advocates for giving priority to the densely populated neighbourhoods around the South Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Street sweepers and water cleaners: machines that make a difference<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In addition to sufficient bins, Vooruit.brussels is also calling for the use of modern cleaning machines. Street sweepers and pressure washers that clean pavements, squares and streets with water are not a luxury. Stubborn dirt, chewing gum, urine, cigarette butts and caked-on residue can only be removed with the right machines. Vooruit.brussels is urging Net Brussel and the municipalities to deploy this equipment more frequently and more specifically in densely populated districts like the South District and the Wiels District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect for public spaces: a shared responsibility<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Infrastructure alone is not enough. Vooruit.brussels also points to the shared responsibility of every resident. Public space belongs to all of us: the street, the park, the pavement. Anyone who throws their rubbish on the street or engages in fly-tipping shows a lack of respect for their neighbours and the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Awareness-raising and neighbourhood consultation are the first steps, but where that is not enough, enforcement must follow. Vooruit.brussels supports a consistent penalty policy for those who persistently ignore the rules, not as a punishment for punishment's sake, but as a signal that public spaces belong to everyone and we are jointly responsible for them.
\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kudos to street cleaners and sanitation workers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Volunteers cannot and should not take over the role of the government. Vooruit.brussels therefore emphasises the importance of sufficient and well-supported cleaning staff: street sweepers, cleaning teams and employees of Net Brussel and the municipalities of Forest and Saint-Gilles for their daily work in these neighbourhoods. They deserve the necessary resources, equipment and recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vooruit.brussels would like to express its sincere thanks to Councillor Yasmina Nekhoul and the municipal services of Saint-Gilles for their support in organising this spring clean-up. This logistical cooperation demonstrates that the authorities and residents can work hand in hand to create cleaner neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
