4. Els Rochette

Els has a background and significant practical experience in the social and socio-artistic field. She started as a street worker and was long-time artistic director of the Globe Aroma artistic work and meeting place in Brussels. Globe Aroma is an open art house for artists and art lovers with refugee or newcomer backgrounds.  

"Human rights for all, that's what I want to achieve. In Brussels, the world comes together and that is an enormous wealth. Yet too many Brussels residents do not have access to housing and employment. Or they face police violence, racism or discrimination." 

It is unacceptable that in our city people are at the mercy of the streets. For those people I raise my voice, the Brussels residents who are left out and rarely heard. 

"Many Brussels residents struggle with poor housing, work in a precarious employment status, have health problems and financial stress, ... They need special attention. We need to be alert when adopting new policies, so that they do not worsen existing inequalities. Organisations on the field are invaluable. Let us cherish them. Finally, one command is needed, on all fronts."   

A safe city  

"Feeling at home starts with feeling safe. Every Brussels resident should be able to move around freely and safely, day and night. Those who cross the line must be punished. Because we do not tolerate impunity. Those who become victims of crime deserve the best assistance. But we also need prevention."   

Every Brussels citizen has a right to safety. When this is compromised, a firm approach by the police and the law is needed. But repression alone will not get us there. We must also invest in assistance, prevention, jobs, and care.
